Rear Admiral Martha Herb

IADC Director

Rear Adm. Martha Herb, originally from Atlanta Georgia, graduated from Lake Forest College with a Bachelor of Arts. She earned both a Master of Arts in Education and Human Development and a Doctor of Education, specializing in counseling, from George Washington University. She is designated in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal community as a Diving and Salvage Officer and Surface Warfare Officer.

 

Commissioned via Officer Candidate School in 1979, Herb became one of the first three women officers to graduate from the Naval School of Diving and Salvage in Washington DC.  While on active duty, she served in various diving commands and in the USS SAMUEL GOMPERS (AD-37).  Transitioning to the Reserve Component in 1983, she completed numerous unit and staff assignments to include five command tours. She worked in NATO as the OIC of a Joint Reserve Cadre supporting the U.S. Military Delegation to the Military Committee.

 

Selected for Flag rank in 2010, she served in Afghanistan as the Chief, Military Technical Agreement Branch on the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Flag Staff Assignments include Deputy, Navy Personnel Command and Director for Personnel Readiness and Community Support (OPNAV N135), and Reserve Deputy Commander Naval Installations Command.  In 2014, she was assigned as Director of the Inter-American Defense College.

 

She is the recipient of various personal decorations and campaign medals.  She has had the distinct honor of serving with shipmates who earned the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Navy Unit Commendation and the Coast Guard Unit Commendation.  She was selected to the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame.
