Inter-American Defense College

The Inter-American Defense College (IADC), located on Fort Lesley J. McNair, was formally opened on 9 October 1962 when the Honorable Dean Rusk, then Secretary of State of the United States, presented the building and furnishings donated by the United States Government.

This guide outlines the essential eligibility, education, professional experience, and sponsorship requirements for admission to the Inter-American Defense College (IADC), accredited Inter-American Defense and Security Masters of Science. Detailed reading of this guide is highly recommended before beginning the admission process.

 

The total quota for each Inter-American Defense College class is approximately 75 students. Each member and observer country of the Organization of American States (OAS) is entitled to a quota of two (2) students. Additionally, each OAS member may nominate additional candidates in case other countries do not fill their quotas. Intermediate to advanced academic proficiency in two or more official OAS languages (Spanish, English, Portuguese and French) is highly desired. Student nominations must meet the following requirements:

 

In accordance with the Inter-American Defense College Rules the IADC invites member and observer countries represented in the Organization of American States (OAS) to nominate candidates; the number of students for each class shall be determined on the IADC Director’s assessment of institutional capacity for that year and the number of eligible applicants from each member country. Student nominations must meet the following requirements:

Military

  1. Have been nominated and supported by his/her country;
  2. Have attained the rank, duty, and responsibility of a Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, or their equivalent;
  3. Have a university degree;
  4. Have graduated from an advanced command and staff school;
  5. Have adequate military training and experience at an advanced level and possibilities of future employment;
  6. Intermediate to advanced academic proficiency in two or more official OAS languages (Spanish, English, Portuguese and French) is highly desired.

 

 

Civilian

  1. Have been nominated and supported by his/her country;
  2. Be a government official or employee;
  3. Have a university degree;
  4. Have the rank, seniority, professional experience, and possibilities of future employment, comparable to those required for military and police students. Exceptional cases will be discussed by the Board of Admission to the decision of the Director;
  5. Intermediate to advanced academic proficiency in two or more official OAS languages (Spanish, English, Portuguese and French) is highly desired.

 

Police

  1. Have been nominated and supported by his/her country;
  2. Have attained senior police rank, duty, and responsibility of a Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, or their equivalent;
  3. Have a university degree;
  4. Have the professional experience, and possibilities of future employment, comparable to those required for military students;
  5. Intermediate to advanced academic proficiency in two or more official OAS languages (Spanish, English, Portuguese and French) is highly desired.

 

Since its beginning, 2732 students from 26 different countries have graduated from the College. The Auditorium provides an exceptional forum in which the students hear over 160 world class guest lectures. The auditorium has simultaneous interpreting equipment, making possible two-way communication in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish.
