Introduction: Ethics & Leadership

In the current global context and due to the constant changes facing our hemisphere, it is difficult to find a more relevant topic to honor the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Inter-American Defense College than to talk about something as fundamental as Ethics and Leadership.

The approach to this topic shows the integral academic formation that the College promotes in its classrooms, leading its students to reflect beyond laws, theories and methods, towards a deep understanding of essential topics such as the exercise of strategic leadership within an ethical framework.

In these times, when many institutions have been exposed to the loss of credibility, is where the ethics of strategic leaders becomes more important. This situation demands a professional practice with a greater moral, social and ethical awareness of the impact that decision making generates, stemming from every-day decisions to those that mark a turning point in the history of their States and, consequently, of our hemisphere. That is why ethics is a fundamental pillar in the formation of IADC graduate leaders and, therefore, of the institutions they represent.

The importance of the ethical acts of leaders has never been more criticized than it is today, when paradoxically the environment is becoming increasingly uncertain and volatile. For this reason, the College brings this topic to the discussion table through thoughts and reflections described by some leaders who today occupy important strategic positions.

As Chief of Studies of this College, it is an honor for me to write these lines that open the discussion of such relevant and crucial topics as ethics and leadership. It is even more gratifying to be able to do so within the framework of the commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the creation of this prestigious institution.
